Scandinavian Royals in 2012

With just a few hours left in 2011, it's time to look into the future. Although we never exactly know what the future brings to us, there are some events in the lives of Scandinavian Royals we can look up to.

On 13-15 January, Queen Margrethe II of Denmark will celebrate her 40 years on Danish throne in the presence of the Danish Royal family (minus Princess Marie who is heavily pregnant). Also Royal Families of Norway & Sweden will attend the celebrations, for Sweden so far King Carl XVI Gustaf & Queen Silvia have been mentioned.

In late January the birth is expected of second child of Prince Joachim & Princess Marie of Denmark. The baby will join their son Prince Henrik (2), as well as Joachim's sons, Prince Nikolai (11) & Prince Felix (9), from his first marriage.


On 5 February Crown Princess Mary of Denmark will celebrate her 40th birthday. So far there are no official celebrations announced.


In March birth is expected of the first child of Crown Princess Victoria & Prince Daniel of Sweden. The baby will become second in line to Swedish throne after his/her mother.


On 10 June Princess Madeleine of Sweden will celebrate her 30th birthday.


On 14 July Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden will celebrate her 35th birthday. Her presence at the traditional concert in Borgholm was already confirmed.


We can add to that also National days  in each country, Official visits which are not announced yet, two christenings, Nobel ceremonies in Sweden & Norway, Olympic Games in London and many more events even with some surprises.

The website of Swedish Royal Court published a new photo of the Swedish Royal Family today. The photo was taken this summer in Solliden.

Scandinavian Royals in 2011

Now that we're just a few days shy of the New Year it's time to look back at what this year has brough to our loved (or not so) Scandinavian Royal Families.

January
On 8th January, Crown Princess Mary of Denmark gave birth to her 3rd and 4th child. Boy was born first at 10:30 am he was 47 cm long and weighs 2,68 kg. Girl was born second at 10:56 am she was 46 cm long and weighs 2,55 kg.

On 17-20th January, Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden visited United Arabian Emirates the visit was organized with conection to the World Future Energy Summit. Except the Summit, during her stay Victoria visited several businesses and organizations with connection to Sweden.

On 18-20th January, King Carl XVI Gustaf & Queen Silvia of Sweden hosted a state visit from Estonia led by Estonian President Toomas Hendrik Ilves & his wife Evelin Ilves. Prince Carl Philip also participated on the visit.

On 25-30th January, Crown Prince Haakon & Crown Princess Mette-Marit attended World Economic Forum in Davos.

February
On 1-2nd February, Princess Marie of Denmark visited the European University Institute in Florence, Italy.

On 23rd February - 6th March Norwegian Royal Family attended various events and competitions asociated with FIS Nordic World Ski Championships which took place in Holmenkollen near Oslo. For several days they were joined by Queen Margrethe II of Denmark, King Carl XVI Gustaf, Queen Silvia, Crown Princess Victoria & Prince Daniel of Sweden. Crown Prince Haakon of Norway was a member of Organizing Committee of the Championships.

March
On 9-11th March, Crown Princess Victoria & Prince Daniel of Sweden visited Malmö.

On 18-23rd March, Prince Joachim & Princess Marie of Denmark together with their family visited Greenland.

On 22-25th March, King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden paid official visit to Botswana. Silvia who should have accompanied him had cancelled the visit and traveled back to Sweden due to strong flu.

On 31st March - 2nd April, Crown Princess Victoria & Prince Daniel of Sweden visited Smaland.

April
On 5-6th April, King Harald & Queen Sonja of Norway hosted a state visit from Lithuania. The delegation was led by Lithuanian President Ms Dalia Grybauskaité.

On 12-14th April, Crown Prince Haakon & Crown Princess Mette-Marit of Norway visited Ghana.

On 14th April, the twins of Crown Prince Frederik & Crown Princess Mary of Denmark were christened in Holmen's church in the presence of the whole Danish royal family. The boy recieved the names Vincent Frederik Minik Alexander and the girl recieved the names Josephine Sophia Ivalo Mathilda. The godparents of Vincent included Crown Prince Felipe of Asturias, Prince Gustav of Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berlenburg and Mr. John Donaldson. The godparents Josephine included Princess Marie of Denmark, Prince Charles of Bourbon-Two Sicilies and Mrs. Patricia Bailey, née Donaldson.

On 29th April King Harlad & Queen Sonja of Norway, Queen Margrethe II of Denmark and Crown Princess Victoria & Prince Daniel of Sweden attended the wedding of Duke of Cambridge & Kate Middleton at Westminster Abbey, London.

On 30th King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden celebrated his 65th Birthday at Royal Palace in Stockholm in the presence of his family (minus Princess Madeleine). Later in the evening Crown Princess Victoria organized a birthday party for her father at Haga Palace, apparently also her brothers controversial girlfriend, Sofia Hellqvist was invited.

May
On 4-7th May, King Carl XVI Gustaf & Queen Silvia paid an offcial visit to Poland, where they were hosted by Polish President Bronislaw Komorowski and his wife Anna. During their stay they visited Warsaw, Wroclaw and Swidnica.

On 9-10th May, King Harald & Queen Sonja of Norway paid an official visit to Slovenia. They were hosted by Slovenian President Danilo Türk and his wife Ms Barbara Miklič Türk. During their stay they visited various places in Ljubljana, Bled and Radovljica.

On 11-12th May, Queen Margrethe II & Prince Henrik hosted a state visit from South Korea. The delegation was led by South Korea's President Lee Myung-Bak and his wife Kim Yoon-Ok. Crown Prince Frederik, Crown Princess Mary, Prince Joachim & Princess Marie also participated at the visit.

On 12-13th May, King Harald & Queen Sonja of Norway paid an official visit to Croatia. They were hosted by Croatian president  Ivo Josipović and his wife Ms Tatjana Josipović. During their stay they visited Zagreb & Šibenik.
On 17th May, Norway celebrates it's National Day. Crown Prince Couple and their children greeted the children's parade in Asker. Later the whole Royal Family greeted the children from balcony of Royal Palace. In the afternoon King Harald & Queen Sonja visited Nordstrand area in Oslo.

On 19-21st May, Crown Princess Victoria & Prince Daniel of Sweden visited Ockelbö & Gävle.

On 23-27th May, Queen Margrethe II & Prince Henrik of Denmark were on their Summer Cruise to Jutland. During this time they visited municipalities of Grenaa, Brønderslev, Hadsund, Anholt & Horsens.

On 24-27th May, Crown Princess Victoria & Prince Daniel of Sweden visited Munich & Berlin in Germany. During their visit they also met with German's president Christian Wulff and his wife Bettina.

On 25th May, King Carl XVI Gustaf & Queen Silvia of Sweden paid a visit to Nykvarns municipality.

On 30th May - 1st June King Harald & Queen Sonja of Norway hosted a state visit from Luxembourg. Luxemburgian delegation was led by Grand Duke Henri of Luxemburg and his wife Grand Duchess Maria Teresa of Luxembourg. Crown Prince Haakon, Crown Princess Mette-Marit & Princess Märtha Louise also participated in the visit.

June
On 6th June, Sweden celebrated their national day, King Carl XVI Gustaf & Queen Silvia paid a visit to Eslöv. Crown Princess Victoria & Prince Daniel opened the Royal Palace and later attended a ceremony to welcome new Swedish citizens at the Town Hall in Stockholm. In the afternoon the whole family attended celebrations in Skansen and in the evening attended a dinner hosted by the King & Queen at Royal Palace.

On 6-11th June, Queen Margrethe II & Prince Henrik visited USA. During their stay they visited Washington, New York & Solvang in California.

On 6-7th June, Crown Prince Haakon of Norway visited Azerbaijan in connection with the opening of International Caspian Oil and Gas Exhibition in Baku.

On June 7-9th, King Harald & Queen Sonja of Norway paid their annual county visit to Troms County.
On June 18th, Queen Margrethe II of Denmark, together with her son Crown Prince Frederik and his wife Mary, attended the religious wedding of her niece, Princess Nathalie of Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berlenburg & Alexander Johannsmann.

July
Between July 1-3 nearly the whole Royal Families of Denmark, Norway & Sweden attended the wedding between Prince Albert of Monaco & Charléne Wittstock in Monaco.

On 10-24th July, Queen Margrethe II & Prince Henrik of Denmark, visited Greenland.

On 14th July, Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden celebrated her 34th birthday on the isle Oland in the presence of her whole family. In the pouring rain she met with people at Soliden in the early afternoon and in the evening the whole family traditionally attended a concert at the football place in Borgholm.

August
On 12th August, Prince Christian of Denmark started school at Tranegårdsskolen in Gentofte. On his first day, he was accompanied by his parents Crown Prince Frederik & Crown Princess Mary of Denmark.

On 17th August at 3 pm, the Swedish Royal Court announced that Crown Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel are expecting their first child in March 2012. As with their engagement news, this one too caused that the website of Royal Court became temporary unavailable due to the high traffic.

On 18th August, Prince Sverre Magnus of Norway started school at Jansløkka in Asker. On his first day he was accompanied by his parents Crown Prince Haakon & Crown Princess Mette-Marit, his grandmother Queen Sonja and his older sister Princess Ingrid Alexandra.

On 19-23rd August, Crown Prince Haakon & Crown Princess Mette-Marit visited Fylkestur. They visited municipalities of More, Romsdal & Hedmark.

On 22-26th August, Crown Prince Frederik & Crown Princess Mary of Denmark were on Summer Cruise to Jutland at Dannebrog. They visited Skagen, Hanstholm, Hirtshals & Aarhus.

On 24th August the Danish Royal Court announced that Prince Joachim & Princess Marie of Denmark are expecting their second child together in late January 2012. The baby will join the couples son Prince Henrik (2) and Joachim's sons from his first marriage, Prince Nikolai (12) & Prince Felix (9).

On 25th August, Crown Prince Haakon & Crown Princess Mette-Marit of Norway celebrated their 10th wedding anniversary with a church service in Oslo Cathedral, concert at University Square in Oslo and private dinner in the evening. Present at the celebrations was also the rest of Norwegian Royal Family and also Crown Princess Victoria & Prince Daniel of Sweden.

On 26-28th August, Crown Princess Mary of Denmark visited Somalia, together with Danish Minister of Developement, Søren Pind.

On 31st August - 1st September, King Harald & Queen Sonja of Norway hosted a state visit from South Africa. Delegation was led by President of South Africa, Dr. Jacob Zuma and his wife Mrs. Tobeka Zuma. Crown Prince Haakon & Crown Princess Mette-Marit also participated on the visit.

September
On 6-9th September, Queen Margrethe II, Prince Henrik & Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark paid an official visit to Russia. They were hosted by Russian President Dmitry Medvedev and his wife Mrs. Svetlana Medvedeva. During their stay they visited varius places and events in Moscow & St. Petersburg.

On 15th September the whole Swedish Royal Family attended the opening of Swedish Parliament.

On 19-20th September Crown Princess Victoria & Prince Daniel of Sweden visited Turku, in connection with it being the World Culture Capital of 2011.

October
On 3rd October, King Harald, Queen Sonja & Crown Prince Haakon of Norway attended the opening of Norwegian Parliament.

On 4th October, the Danish Royal Family attended the opening of Danish Parliament.

On October 20-21st, King Harald & Queen Sonja of Norway, King Carl XVI Gustaf & Queen Silvia of Sweden and Crown Prince Frederik & Crown Princess Mary attended the 100th anniversary celebrations of American Scandinavian Foundation. They also used the time before or after for another visits in USA. Harald & Sonja paid a visit to Minnesota and Iowa. Carl Gustaf & Silvia attended another celebration in Jamestown. Mary & Frederik visited New York & Boston.

On October 24th - November 2nd Prince Daniel of Sweden visited Washington & New York. This visit was planned both for him and his wife Crown Princess Victoria, but Victoria was advised by her doctors against the long flight and packed program. During his stay in Washington among others Daniel visited an elementary school during Nordic Food Day, visited Swedish Embassy and several Swedish-American organizations and attended several health oriented seminars. In New York he visited the Swedish UN delegation, visited a charter school in Harlem and attended a dinner and seminar at Swedish Chamber of Commerce where also Princess Madeleine joined him.

On 29th October - 3rd November, Prince Joachim & Princess Marie of Denmark visited Japan in connection with  the opening of the exhibition of Queen's decoupage costumes for the film The Wild Swans at Tokyo.

November
On 7-8th November, Crown Princess Victoria & Prince Daniel of Sweden visited Västernorrland.

On 10th November, Queen Sonja of Norway debuted as an artist during an Exhibition in Helsingbor, Sweden she presented 8 of her works. Present at the opening of the exhibition were her husband King Harald and son Crown Prince Haakon as well as Queen Silvia of Sweden.

On 19-26th November, Crown Prince Frederik & Crown Princess Mary of Denmark visited Australia with Danish Business Delegation. During their stay they visited Sydney, Canberra, Melbourne and Victoria. After the visit, Mary and her children, later joined by Frederik, spent several weeks visiting her relatives in Hobart, Tasmania.

On 27th November - 1st December, Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark paid visit to Vietnam with business delegation. The visit was part of the 40th anniversary celebrations of the diplomatic relations between Denmark and Vietnam.

December
On 1-5th December Prince Carl Philip of Sweden visited South Africa. He paid visit to Swedish Embassy, Swedish Trade Council and several organizations with tie to Sweden.

On December 10th the Swedish Royal family attended the Nobel Prize Ceremony & Banquet in Stockholm. On the same day the Norwegian royal family attended the Noberl Peace Prize Ceremony & Banquet in Oslo.

On 14th December, King Harald & Crown Prince Haakon of Norway attended various events in connection with 100th anniversary of Roald Amundsen's arrival at the South Pole.

According to Swedish newspaper Expressen, Crown Princess Victoria & Prince Daniel of Sweden spent Christmas in Ockelbö with Daniel's parents Olle & Eva Westling and his sister Anna with her family.

On Monday, December 19th, Prince Carl Philip attended the launch of the calendar „Impressionen auf den Spuren des Carl Linnaeus“ in Stuttgart, Germany.

Norway: Sonja attends a mass

Queen Sonja of Norway attended a mass at Oslo Cathedral commemorating the victims of the tragedy in July yesterday.

Norway: Harald & Sonja visited a hospital

King Harald & Queen Sonja of Norway visited Sunnaas hospital yesterday. Part of their program was a meeting with survivors of the terrorist attacks in July, as some of them are still in hospital.


Sweden: Happy Birthday Queen Silvia!




Queen Silvia of Sweden was born as Silvia Renate Sommerlath on 23 December 1943 in Heidelberg, Germany as the fourth and youngest child of Walther Sommerlath and his wife Alice, née de Toledo. During the 1972 Summer Olympic Games in Munich she met King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden, then still Crown Prince of Sweden, he was enthroned on 19 September 1973. They married four years later on 19 June 1976 in Stockholm. Together they have three children, Crown Princess Victoria (*1977), Prince Carl Philip (*1979) and Princess Madeleine (*1982). Her first grandchild is due in March 2012.
